The new development in silicon optical integration, and the design andprocesses of fabricating GeSi/Si single-mode rib waveguide at the wavelength λ=1.3 μm is reported. The propagating loss of the waveguide has reached 0.7 dB/cm. The heightand width of the waveguide are 4~8 μm and 8~12 μm respectively. The size of themare comparable to those of single-mode fibre cores. Besides, the numerical aperture of thewaveguide at the ends are also matched to the fibre. The fabricated waveguide meets allthe demands of silicon optical integration. Finally, the single mode outputs from a Y-power-divider prepared by the GeSi-Si rib waveguides discribed above is shown.

Based on the wave equation, we directly analysis the guided modes in a helical fiber with circular cross-section and arbitrary profile of the refractive index in localco ordinate system. Two important results are obtained: (1) The guided modes in a helical fiber are right-rotated or left-rotated circularly polarised modes. (2) There don't exist TE and TM modes in a helical fiber. The theoretical results agree with that of the available experimental measurements.

For the planar optical waveguide with second order polynomial index profile, the wave equation is solved by means of first order perturbational method in this paper, and analytical solution of mode field and mode dispersion equations are oblained in terms of Airy functions. The propagation constauts are calculated by the first order perturbational approximation and compered to experimental values. The calculated propagation constants agree quite well with measured ones.

This peper presents how a new and simple technique refered as to Dual Fringe Patterns Phase Shifting Interferometry to be used in holography interferometry for automated phase evaluation of time dependent problem. The novel feature of the technique is that two fringe patterns with exactly desired phase shift can be obtained simultaneousely. Although, the phase distribution of the two fringe patterns could vary with respect to time due to the effect of environmental disturbance, the phase shift between them is fixed. The technique is based on the combination of spliting fringe pattern, polarization phase shifting and two dimensional digital FFT schemes.

The vector wave functions satisfying vector homogeneous Helmholtz equation are introduced as the basic vectors, and the fields both outside and inside the apertures of the grating are expanded by vector plane wave functions and vector modes respectively. Applying the field coupling conditions, the diffraction equations for the amplitudes are derived. The method can be used to study the diffraction of optical plane waves with arbitrary incident direction and polarization.

In this paper, the information characteristics of the Wiener spectrum of a double exposure specklegram have been discussed. As an example, the general expressions of Young' s fringe patterns are obtained. We have analysed the fringe visibility and its dependence on the nature of the deformation and displacement of the specinaen and on theextent of laser beam illuminated area on the specklegrams. The maximum number of visible fringes has been derived. Finally, diffraction halo brightness and it dependence on the extent of laser beam illuminated area on the specklegrams. The maximum number of visible fringes has been derived. Finally, diffraction halo brightness and it dependence on the contrast of speckles have been given.

Allowing for CCD resolution, the authors have investigated in detail the image blurring allowance of digital intensity correlation metering in the case of slant optical axis. The maximum image blurring allowances caused by both the out-plane displacement, deformation and the tilt have been presented.

The study of radiation time property for cavity target heated by laser is reported. Laser wavelength of 1.053 μm, energy 30~750 J, pulse wideth 600~1100 ps with Gaussian shape are used to the target. The radiation time property of the source region are measured by two sub-keV X-ray energy specttometers respectively through laser incidence hole and X-ray transmission hole. The emission X-ray time history of source region and the relation of pulse width with emission hole area, hole shape, emission energy region and laser irradiation intensity et al. are given.

A mathematical model of the optical resonator of high energy laser is set up inthis paper specially for the unstable resonator of high energy laser by using the method ofmatrix transmission optics combining with diffraction integral equation. The results ofcomputer simulation show that the model is correct and some important results areachieved.

Mirrorless transient optical bistubility due to reverse saturation absorption inorganic materials has been studied. Optical bistubility loops have been obtained fromtheoretical calculation for copper pothalocyanine (CuPc). Increasing absorption opticalbistability has been abserved in CuPc solutions. A fast analysis method for the Narcissus effect based on pseudo-paraxial raytracing is proposed. The definitions and tracing formulae for the pseudo-paraxial rays are given. The Narcissus induced temperature reduction for the axial point and the Narcissus induced temperature variation over the field can then be calculated. Different methods of reducing the Narcissus effect during automatic design of the optical system are discussed. All the analyses and controls are implemented in the GOSA (General Optical System Analysis and optimization) program developed at Beijing Institute of Technology.

We propose a method to improve discrimination for synthetic discrimination function (SDF), which is carried out by training the complementary samples under the condition of zero correlation peaks while the samples under the condition of equal correlation pobs. Therefore, the distances between the trained class and all other classes are increased in the decision space and high discrimination is resulted from. On the other hand, the advantage of the distortion-invariant recognition for synthetic discrimination function is kept as well. Experimental results related to fingerprint identification are given.

The resultS shown, the probability distribution of the two-dimension beam wandrs obeys Rician distribution, and the probability distribution of the average intensity fluctuations measured by the point-aperture satisfies Gamma distribution.

Two expressions presented in this paper may be employed to calculate the value of longitudinal focal displacement of the reflected beam from an absorbing medium for both s and p polarization. Our calculations show that Fp is positive (p-wave shifts alongthe reflected direction), and Fs is negative (s-wave shifts along the oppositive). Assuming that the extinction coefficient equals to zero, the two expressions can be simplified to the forms given by C. C. Chan and T. Tamir which fit only for the non-absorbing medium.

A new experiment was carried out on a modern HP-workstation with the hope of providing a better agreement between corrected CIELUV value and subjective estimation of color differences. In the middle of a 19" screen two adjacent fields (2° or 10° in size) of different colors were shown. The left field was fixed at 5, 30, 50 and 70 CIELUV units respectively, and the color on the right field could be changed by verying its saturation and luminance. Observers were asked to adjust both colors to the same perceived color difference in relation to the background. The result shows that it was possible to achieve good agreement between predicted and perceived color differences by using a linear correction of the color coordinates u* and v*.
