A discrete Cayley number neural network model is presented for the first time, whereby a neuron is a 256-state (±1±i±j±k±e±ie±je±ke). Signal-to-noisetheory is used to analyse the stability and the storage capacity. The storage capacity of theCayley model is the same as that of the Hopfield model. This 256-state neural networkcan be applied to recognize the 256-level color or 256-level grey patterns.

A technique of using optical wavefront-division multiplexer to realize highefficiency joint transform correlation is proposed in this paper. The input plane of thesystem is divided into many equal perts by computer, and in every part the reference andthe input images displayed side by side. An optical wavefront-division multiplexerused in this system makes the optical information read out from different ports to form apower spectral array at the focal plane of the first Fourier transform lens. As a result, enhanced optical correlation signal is obtained at the output plane. The proposed real-time high-efficiency joint transform correlator (JTC) can use the physical area of the liquid crystal light valves (LCLVs) as well as the readout lightmore efficiently. The principle of the system has been analyzed. The design of the optical wavefront-division multiplexer and the experimental results of the system are given.

This paper describes a novel scanning tunnling microscope (STM) system usinga two-dimensional monolithic Paranel spring (MPS) and piczo-electric actuators (PZT)for precision two-dimensional positioning. This leads the interference between the x-axisdisplacement and the y-axis to be very small. The PZT used for controlling the z-axisdisplacement and the sample-to-tip distance is mounted on the monolithic parallel spring. Therefore, the mutual interference to z-axis displacements is negligible.

In this paper, the crystal spectrograph used to investigate long wavelength softX-ray spectroscopy of laser-produced plasmas was described. The laser plasmam soft X-ray spectra with wavelength up to 5.8 nm have been taken by using OHM crystal (2d=6.35 nm), combining with very thin carbon filter (310 nm in thickness) and soft X-raysensitive film (SIOFM-5FW). The measured spectral resolution of the spectrograph wasalso given.

A Nd:YAG laser was side pumped with laSer-diode-array of 45 W Q-cw(400 μs) output. This laser provides 3.5 mJ output at 1064 nm for free runing oscillation, and 0.85 mJ at 532 urn for Q-switched operation with pulse. width of 15 ns. Removing the Q-switch away, and shortening the cavity optical length to less than 5 cm, a single longitudinal mode of 532 nm laser was observed near threshold. Increasing the pumpPower somewhat, we have observed the antiphase laser output.

Single crystals of Cr3Sr3Ga2Ge4O14 garnets are grown by using the Czochralskimethod in Platimum-rhodium crucible. The polarised optical absorption spectra of Cr aremeasured. The schematic description on the absorped bands in visible and near-IRwavelensth is presented. We suggest that Cr enters the octahedral and tetrahedralpositions as Cr3+ and Cr4+ respectively. The near-IR absorption of Cr4+ will affect theluminescence of Cr3+.

Unlike that of the Solitons of NLS equation, the amplituderegions for the first, second and third order solitons of the Kumar-NLS equation are 1.4≤N≤4.0, 4.0≤N≤7.0 aam 7.0≤N≤15.0, respectively. The interactionProperties of the first order Solitons are analysized and five aspects of these properties areunderstood.

Based on the well known optical them distribution in free space a generalizedstimulated Raman scattering (SRS) coupled wave equation is deduced and a simplemethod to calculate the temporal and spatial distribution of pump beam and Stokes beamin SRS is proposed in the paper. The results obtained by this method show that, for SRSStokes beam, not only the intensity is enhanced but also the pulse duration can becompressed. The principle and conditions being satisfied for beam clean-up are discussed. The merits of SRS in optical communications for compensating both the intensity loss and pulse expanding due to fiber dispersion are emphasized.

In this paper, we report a quasi-velocity-matched electrooptic (EO) modulatorconstructed by periodic domain inversion technology and the newest experimental resultswith it for generation of ultra-wide optical sideband. The quasi-velocity-matchingbetween phase velocity of microwave and the group velocity of light, not dependins onthe modulation frequency, was etublished by using periodic domain inversion of an EOcrystal LiTaO3. Consequently, long effective interaction length was ontuined at 16.25 GHz to increase the modulation effeciency. As a result, we have obtained modulation index 57 rad and extended the sidebands as wide as 1.85 THz.

We discuss the steady-state and quantum noise behaviors of coherently or incoherently pumped conventional three-level lasers. It shows that the sub-poissonian statistics can be predicted in the regime where pumping rates can be comparable with the spontaneous rate of lower lasing level and lasing is not optimal. But only for coherently pumped case, lasing without inversion can occur and noise squeezing is increased because of quantum-interference effect.
