Using the differentiation method for the mode equation of the trapezoidal cross-section dieleotrio optical waveguide, the expression of mode absorption loss coefficient is derived. As an example SiO2/GaAs/AlGaAs waveguide is calculated and the relative errors are discussed.

    We have, on combining holography with photolithography, improved the etching conditions of making binary elements and produced photolithographic holograms which can yield continuous phase modulation. This paper points out that it is most important to strictly control the ratio of etching rates, gives the curves of the etching rates in respect of the flow of etching gas in the case of constant response power, A proper working point has been found. As the applications of the curves, high-quality optical elements can be made.

    High-power 1.55μm lasera have been sought and highly considered for a long time. A large optical cavity (LOC) structure was successfully prepared for the first time in this work by reasonably designing its configuration and by using the proper growth technigue so as to realize lasers with output power higher than 2W in pulsed operation. The devices are also characterized by their low threshold current (Jth≤2.7kA/cm2 for broad area contact structure) and high temperture stability (T0≈130kK). At the same time they have good operation modes and are an ideal source of light in this spectrum region.

    The gain spatial distributions of Li-like SiXII ion and Na-like CuXIX ion recombination X-ray laser are investigated in this paper. It shows that recombination X-ray lasing gain appears at designated distance from target surface, i. e. in the region with intermediate plasma electron density, while there exists self-absorption near target surface with higher plasma electron density.

    The output property of a He-Ne phase conjugate laser with Ce:Fe:LiNbO3 as its phase conjugate mirror has been studied experimentally in steady state. Atheory about the laser has been built up under strong pumping condition. The experimental results were in accord with the theoretical ones approximately.

    The experimental and theoretical studies on the pulse preionization of high power CW CO2 laser are presented in this paper and the photoionization process ia emphersized. The results show that the pulse preionization can significantly increase the p*d value of the discharge, the input power density and the laser output. It is proved to be a simple but effective method for increasing power ability and improving discharge stability of a high power CW CO2 laese.

    The effect of a focusing system which is composed of a spherical regular hexagon lens array and an aspherieal principal focusing lens used for improving the illumination uniformity of the high power laser on the target surface has been demonstrated experimentally. We report here a excellent result that the flatness of the laser driven shock wave was improved obviously when this focusing system was used at laser beam power of 1012 W.

    Unusual large resonant third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility X(3) of 6×10-3 esu was found in push-pull azobenzenes. This is essential to the onset of bistablity, Optical bistability has been demonstrated in glassy polymer film doped with such compo unds in Kretschmann configuration using 488nm Ar+ laser as light source. The electronic absorptive mechanism or mechanism of optically refractive index change of the observed bistablity is suggested by connecting it with the trans ois photoisomerization process of the investigating dyes.

    The sensitive single-beam technigue for mrasuring the nonlinear refractive index has been studisd for the cases that matorials have varied linear absosption ,It is found that the inereament of lines abserption will smear the solution of this technique and lead the sensihility lower. The experimenfal a sults of the nonlinear refractive index meamrement of a kind of polymer material deped with chlorphyll-α are also reported. The is n2≈3.4×10-9esu. Analysis shows that nonlinear refraotion is caused by π-electrons effects.

    The use of Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.75Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 as self pumped phase conjugators with internal reflection is reported, The reflectivities as high as 63% at 514.5nm and 60% at 632.8nm were realized. It was found that the photorefractive response changes significantly at different dopping concentration. The responses of the crystals to the laser wavelength, incident angle and dopant concentration were studied.

    The threshold behavior of backward Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) on CCl4 is reported in this paper. The threshold behavior of SBS as a function of foous lenght, pump puls width, and divergence have been investigated. We show that the competing effects between SBS and other nonlinear can be eliminated by increaseing appropriately the fouus length.

    Quantitative measurements of reflected optical second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1.06 μm versus the angle of polarization of the incident light from the interface between opaque silver films and several glasses are presented. And we also measured the reflected SHG from the surface of vacuum cold-evaporated thick silver film on a polyorystalline silver substrate in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber before and after annealing the specimen. For comparison, the reflected SHG from 99.99% finely polished polycrystalline silver surface was detected in UHV. We measured that the phenomenological parallel current parameter b is equal to -0.97 and the phenomenological normal current parameter a had a value of 2.1 for glass-silver interface and -9 for polyclystalline silver sample. And that a varied from 7 to -5 for the cold-evaporated silver film on a polycrystalline silver substrate with the sample annealed. The experimental result shows that the parameter a is sensitive to the surface of the silver film.

    26 absorption lines of water vapor in vibration-rotation band have beoen bser-ved by using an AlGaAs diode laser around 822.6-823.2 nm. The minimum absorption coefficient α-3 ×10-6 cm-1 and the SNR-60 (for α-1×10-4 cm-1) have been detected, A pressure broadening coefficient of 0.128 MHz/Pa was measured.

    Frequeney up-conversion in Er3+ doped silica fibers pumped by a CW 1064 nm laser has been first demonstrated. The visible fluorescence spectra of Er3+/GeO2/SiO2 and Er3+/Al2O3/GeO2/SiO2 optical fibers were measured. Two-photon absorption and excited-state-absorption of Er3+ ions are proposed to account for the experimental observation.

    Light isolators in common transmitter/receiver antenna coherent laser radars is discussed in this paper. The characteristics of quarter waveplate and Fresnel rhomb are analysed, and the quarter retarders of Ge crystal are designed and produced. The rhomb has been used in the CO2 laser heterodyne detection system, and the transfer efficiency is more than 93%.

    In this paper, spectral response characterization on S-25 and New S-25 photo-cathodes are studied. Since photocathode has thicker pliotocathode thickness, higher photocathode structure parameter and spectral response cut-off wavelength, phot oca-thode sensitivity between 850 and 1000nm is improved. The improvements repres ent the superiority of New S-25 photooathode as well as a new direction of multialkali photocathodes.

    A large separation "oscillator" source-travelling wave amplifier approach is suggested for attaining high power fully coherent X-ray source. Using a newly-designed aspherical lens combination, a long narrow local line can be obtained, resulting in a more uniform and narrow laser-produced plasma column. It may be a great help to raise gain-length product.

    We made a Pr-Kr hollow cathode discharge lamp (HCD) and measured hyper fine structure spectra (H. F. S) of 6603.60cm-1-23488.64cm-1, 9684.24cm-1-26654.48cm-1 and 9641.90 cm-1-26654.48 cm-1 transitions. The A constants of the energy levels 23488.64cm-1 and 26654.48cm-1 were calculated. This is the first report on the fluorescence technique used in Pr HCD.
