By using coupled-mode equation, the formula for conversion efficiency of Cerenkov second harmonic generation (CSHG) is deduced in this paper. It can be concluded from the analysis that the conversion efficiency of CSHG is determined mainly by overlap integral and an effective method for the enhancement of conversion efficiency is proposed. The measured conversion efficiency in the CSHG experiment using Nd:YAG laser is approximately 1% and it can be enhanced to 1.3% by increasing the cover refractive index of the waveguide. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.

    This paper presents a trial solution for the predominant field distribution of an arbitrary order guided mode of Ti:LiNbO3 optical waveguides. The parameters of the solution can be reasonably determined by using the variational technique. And the propagation constant can be approximately obtained simultaneously. Compared with the extended effective index method and the effective index method, the main advantage besides its high accuracy and simplisity in methematical style is that the unknown parameters are easy to be determined. Also, we can obtain the analytical expression of the refractive index profile of the equivalent slab waveguide.

    The basic issues of photon accelerator scheme (frequency up- conversion of a radiation pulse by a langmuir wave) are studied. The dependence of pulse frequency on the background plasma density and electron-density perturbation, in the presence of a langmuir wave, is dertermined. The maximum frequency conversion, trapping of radiation pulse, accelerating phase of the langmuir wave, and phase slippage effect are discussed upon the calculation results.

    The technology of soft X-ray contact microscopy (SXCM) enables living biological specimens to be imaged at sub-optical resolutions. Using high- power pulsed lasers produced plasma as soft X-ray source for contact microscopy is descried in this paper, the resolution of contact micrographs better than is obtained 1 μm is obtained.

    The third- order nonlinear optical properties of two kinds of fullerenes (molecules of C60 and C70), which are solved in toluene, were studied through a degenerate four wave mixing process respectively. The third-order hyperpolarizabilities γ1111 of C70 molecule and C60 molecule are measured to be 1.2×10-30 esu and 4.0×10-31 esu, corresponding to an estimated third-order optical susceptibility x1111(3) of 2.5×10-8 esu and 8.5×10-9 esu for solid-state materials, respectively. The origin of the large nonlinear optical response of fullerene family is explained successfully with the free electron model.

    Ferrofluid composites consist of non-magnetic polystyene particles dispersed in a kerosence-based ferrofluid. Their birefringence and dichroism in applied magnetic field were measured. In experiments it was found that under the condition of the same magnetic field, 1) the birefringence of ferrofluid composites is smaller than that of pure ferrofluid; 2) the linear dichroism of the composite samples is stronger than that of the pure ones. With a simple theoretical model, the results are explained.

    This paper deals with the theory of degenerate four- wave mixing (DFWM) in trantarent and absorbing media. The values of third order nonlinear susceptibilities χ(3) and nonlinear refractive index n2 in semiconductor doped glass, inorganic and organic media were given experimentally. The time response properties of the nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) was also determined. Time resolution of the experimental device is 5 ps.

    A bulk quadranglar double layer optical path current sensor is structured. It emploied total internal reflection of linear polarized light in ZF- 7 glass. This paper analysed the phase difference between p -component and s -component in total reflection. When two closer incident planes are perpendicular each other, the p -component and s -component of two total reflections exchange and their phase shifts are compensated each other. Her we also presented some experimental results.

    This paper describes an excimer laser and its beam delivery system for corneal radial keratotomy. A beam of 0.1 4 mm in width and 8 mm in length is abtained with this system. The energy density is over 200 mJ/cm2, and the rotation of slit image is allowed by a Dove prism. This optical beam delivery system is suitakle for corneal surgery.

    The polarization effect of a solid cube-corner reflector on a light beam incident in any direction is analyzed. Some formulas which consider both polarization and amplitude changes are given using the Jones calculus. The calculation results obtained are proved in experiments for the case when the incident light is parallel to the cube body-diagonal and in some cases when the incident light is not parallel to the diagonal.

    The holographic aberration- compensating method, which suits for the arbitrary readout conditions, is presented in this paper. The holographic optical element (HOE) has both high efficiency and low aberrations when the HOE is fabricated at short wavelength (540 nm) and reconstructed at long wavelength (red or infrared) with this method. Some calculated and experimental results are given.

    Polyvinyl alcohol and some additives were introduced into the gelatin ammonium dichromate system for making Lippmann holograms. Experimental results have shown that these holograms possess better environmental stability than conventional dichromated gelatin holograms. Tentative analysis is also presented about the functions of the polyvinyl alcohol and the additives added. Mechanism of the improved environmental stability is discussed.

    Based on the analysis of the design theories[1,2] for non-collinear acoustooptic tunable filter (AOTF), this paper analysed and accurately calculated the angular dependence between the acoustic polar angle θa and incident light polar angle θi for TeO2. θa-θi curve satisfied the parallel- tangents momentum- matching condition for non- collinear AOTF with a maximum angular aperture is obtained. The resulted curve obviously improved the θa-θi curve of Chang[2], and it provides a solid theoretical basis for the design of TeO2 AOTF.

    The characteristics of wavelength of dark-band valley in the transmitted spectrum of dichromated gelatin (DCG) holographic reflection element against the angles of incident beam are investigated experimentally. The use of holographic reflection element with two groups of peak-intensity planes as the holographic angle-sensitive element (HASE) is presented. The HASE has high angular sensitivity and the property of sensitizing to incident beam within very wide angles. The influences of experimental parmeters including the processing conditions and the ratios of reference to object on the minima and bandwidths of dark-band of transmitted spectrum are also analysed.

    With a home made Ho-Kr hollow cathode discharge (HCD) lamp we measured 9 lines of 165Ho by optogalvanic spectroscopy in 569-600 nm range. The transition levels and its constants of hyperfine structure were determined. They are the first report in HCD to our knowledge.

    The TOF mass spectra were measured for the laboratory extracted C60/ C70 and chromatographically purified C60 by directly detecting the laser desorbed ions. The dependence of mass spectra on the experimental conditions was discussed.

    In this paper, the calculation formulas on the CL spectral effective collected-efficiency of rotational semi-ellipsoid mirror are derived under the uniform luminescence model of a point source, and the relationship between its collected efficiency and ellipsoid parameter, CL collected angle, exit angle, azimuth angle of the exit-beam, etc are analysed. The theoretical calculation and experimental results are given and they are in good agreement conclusions.
