Phase unwrapping is an ill posed problem. A new 2 D phase unwrapping method, based on the global continuity of the physical information, is proposed in this paper. The method, which is derived from the least cross section difference of the physical quantity, has shown to produce a reliable result in the presence of error sources, such as noise, phase discontinuity more than π and insufficient sampling, etc. In addition, the algorithm is very simple and fast.
