A novel combination type sensing structure of the torsion beam has been designed, in which the fiber grating with a determinate length is bonded to the interface between the solid beam and air core beam with a determinate angle along the direction of the axes of the torsion beam. Using the difference of the strain distribution at the two sides of the interface between the real core beam and air core beam, through measuring the reflective wavelength difference of two sides of the interface, the torsional sensing of the fiber grating with the temperature independent has been realized. Theoretical analyses and experimental results indicate that this sensor can automatically remove the temperature cross sensitivity in torsional sensing, the wavelength shift difference of the fiber grating in the sides of the interface is linear to the torsional angel, the torque and torsional stress with the determinate arm of force, and this relationship is not dominated by the temperature change. In the range of the torsional angle and torque sensitivities are 0.092 nm/degree, 2.076 nm/Nm, respectively.

The blood taken from a healthy human vein is irradiated by different wavelength lights at 502 nm, 530 nm and 632.8 nm. The fluorescent spectra are tested by the grating spectrograph. The result indicates that the fluorescent intensity of the blood induced by the light at 530 nm is the strongest. The fluorescence of the blood induced by the light at 502 nm is very weak. The emitting spectrum of the blood induced by the light of 632.8 nm appears in both side of 632.8 nm. This result shows that the processes of interaction between laser and blood may be different when wavelengths of the exciting lights are different. So the biological effects of the lights on the blood may be different.

The influence of the peaking capacitor and the pressure of mixture gas on the performance of UV preionized pulsed HF laser is investigated. There exist an optimum mixing ratio (SF 6/C 2H 6=20∶1) and an optimum capacitor ratio (C p/C s=0.3). In addition, the laser pulse width decreases as the gas pressure increases. Under the optimum mixing ratio the maximum attainable output energy and the optimal pressure increase with increase of the charging voltage. The laser gives laser output energy up to 400 mJ with a maximum electric efficiency about 2.2% and the specific energy 31.7 J/l·atm.

A new style tunable fiber laser in which an acoustooptic tunable filter (AOTF) and an erbium doped fiber combine to form a Fabry Perot resonator is presented and theoretically investigated in this article. It has wide tunable range and can be conveniently and rapidly tuned by changing the acoustic frequency. Under neglecting excited state absorption (ESA) and amplification of spontaneous emission (ASE), the linewidth, tunable characteristic, pump threshold and slope efficiency of the laser have been calculated. At the center wavelength of 1550 nm, an output peak with a FWHM of 0.26 nm is obtained; the tuned peak gap is about 8.95 nm when the acoustic frequency is changed 1 MHz. Theoretically, the tunable range is confined only by erbium doped fiber gain and filter bandwidth. The calculational results indicate the pump threshold and slope efficiency of this laser are 0.795 mW and 15.15%, respectively.

The optimal operating condition of gain switched semiconductor laser with different modulation rate is studied in this paper. The theoretical results point that the optimal operating condition is quite different for the variation of modulation rate. In the condition of low modulation rate, small bias current should be applied to avoid the tailing of output pulse. In the condition of high modulation rate, large bias current should be applied in order to improve the extinction ratio of the pulse. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental results.

In this paper a new method of measuring some parameters of photoelasticity is presented, and the heterodyne interferometry has successfully been applied to the field of photoelasticity of selected optical materials. A device which brings atmosphere to bear on the optical materials has been developed to measure the change of refractive index at different pressures, and the relationship between the given pressure and the corresponding change of refractive index has been obtained through a series of experiments. Also, a careful analysis is given to the results of the experiments. The simple device and the easy method can make the last measuring precision of change of refractive index reach 8.4×10 -8 with small stress applied.

Based on the characteristic of the fiber grating wavelength absolute encoding, the vertical sensing measurements of the stress, displacement have been realized by means of the improving the structure design of the free end of the cantilever beam. The theoretical analyses and the experimental results indicate that the magnitudes and the vertical directions of the mechanical quantities, such as stress, displacement and etc. can be sensed and measured through monitoring the value and direction of the wavelength shift of the fiber grating that is bonded to the near fixed end of the cantilever beam. In the vertical directions, the experimental sensitivities of the stress are 1 87 nm/N and 3 40 nm/N, the experimental sensitivities of the displacement are 0 23 nm/mm and 0 41 nm/mm, respectively.

A novel fiber optic sensor used for temperature measurement under the offshore oil well was proposed based on the displacement of the optical absorption edge occurring in semiconductors under the influence of temperature variation as a result of temperature induced energy shifting of conduction band extrema. The structure of the sensor and the measurement principle were described. The common path reference measurement and node type error compensation technologies were developed. And the detailed theoretical analysis indicated that the proposed sensor system could effectively improve measurement errors caused by the light fluctuation, difference and variation of the detector responsiveness and the circuit magnification times, the transmission loss, and so on. It approved that this sensor system could be applied under the long term formidable conditions with fairly good measurement stability. The temperature measurement range is from -20℃ to 175℃.

Optical code division multiplex access (OCDMA) transmission system experiment based on spectral splicing is demonstrated. Different users are distinguished by the different free spectral range (FSR) of the tunable Fabry Perot cavity of the encoder/decoders. The influence of the multiple access interference (MAI) on the system performance is analyzed. The performance of the transmitter, the optical channel and the encoder/decoder is discussed. The BER measurement is also realized. The test results show that the bit error rate is better than 10 -9 after transmission of 11 km simple mode fiber with the access rate of 155 Mb/s and the MAI value 30 times higher than received optical power. This system is a possible solution for the future all optical access system for its lower cost and simple structure.

Statistical characteristics of second order polarization mode dispersion (2 nd PMD) are investigated by Jones Transfer Matrix method. The model in which the value of PMD varies with step size in simulation is corrected. Using this corrected model, the frequency correlation function of PMD vector and the probability distribution of 2 nd PMD are obtained when the value of PMD is 25 ps; the results show good agreements with the theoretical prediction. It is necessary to higher order compensation in these conditions by analyzing the pulse broadening of an 8 ps width Gauss pulse briefly.
