This paper presents an overview of the research progress on the quantum-dot lasers. The structure growth and optimization of quantum-dot lasers are introduced firstly, then the optoelectronic properties are discussed in the term of spectrum and modeling, and the dynamic characters of quantum-dot lasers such as homogeneous broadening of optical gain, lasing spectrum control, transition property of excited state etc., are presented based on rate equation. The outlook of the future works on quantum-dot lasers is given finally.

An introduction is given to the basic definition and conception of the angular momentums of the light field, and the angular momentums of a variety of cylindrical symmetric beams. At the same time, angular momentum may be produced by use of a π/2 mode converter, which modifies the phase structure of the beam. Absorption of the light allows both the spin and orbital angular momentum of a light beam to be transferred to microscopic particles held within optical tweezers, forming an optical spanner. In addition, as optical tweezers and spanners, the potential applications of cylindrical symmetric beams in optical guiding, traps, manipulations and controls of microscopic particles and biological cells are briefly discussed.

In this paper, the advances of atmospheric aerosol mass spectrometry were reviewed, from off-line measurement methods to real time methods, especially laser desorption/ionization (LDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry as a method that can measure simultaneously the size and components of single aerosol particle. The principle and application of the LDI time-of-flight mass spectrometry were showed in this paper also.

The article puts forward the synchronous pump A-O Q-switched all solid-state pulse laser, analyzes the basic theory of it, designs and realizes this new type of pulse laser. The laser overcomes the faults of the parasitical laser pulse which exists now small all solid-state pulse laser and low power of laser pulse peak value. We have got the continuous output laser pulse without parasitical pulse, which is with the repeat frequency 4.5 kHz, the peak power value 6 kW, and the width of pulse 18 ns, by using 2 W LD pump. The laser, with higher peak power value and better laser pulse, can meet the demand of laser rangefinder and laser radar. The article describes in detail the experiment scheme, experiment device and experiment results.

A novel multiple-active-region tunneling-regenerated strained-quantum-well vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with a greatef-than-unity differential quantum efficiency is proposed. This novel VCSELs is expected to have an improved performance, specifically, lower threshold current and higher output power. The optimum DBR reflectivity formula in terms of wall-plug efficiency is determined for this novel VCSELs with fixed supply current and series resistance as a parameter. At the same time, we discuss the relationship among wall-plug efficiency, supply current, series resistance and DBR reflectivity, which will play an important role in the device design and device preparation.

Beginning with the nonlinear Maxwell's equation, using simple quasi-equilibrium model and thermal elastic theory, we conduct the theoretical analysis of photoacoustic Raman effect in solids. The expression for the PARS signal under pulsed laser excitation is derived. The paper concludes with a discussion of some characteristics of PARS process in solids, experimental problems and its potential applications.

By focusing the static beam of Cr:LISAF laser on fiber medium, the mode competition will take place. Effective compression of laser pulses using backward SBS of broad-band and multi-transverse mode Cr:LISAF laser pulses is realized. Compression under different pump voltage is discussed in this paper. Influence of focal length and influence of radius and length of fiber on pulsewidth compression are also analyzed.

We have studied the quantum dynamic behavior of system of two-mode squeezed field interacting with Bose-Einstein condensate of V-type three-level atoms, and analyzed the possibility of preparation of two-mode atomic laser via interaction of two-mode field and Bose-Einstein condensate of V-type three-level atoms. It is shown that the atoms from trapped state in Bose-Einstein condensate excited to untrapped states by two-mode radiation frequency maintain properties of coherent states. This result predicts theoretically that two-mode atomic laser can be prepared via interaction of two-mode field and Bose-Einstein condensate of V-type three-level atoms.

This paper presents the Lorenz chaotic system tracking control of the reference signal by designing the proper controller based on the theory of asympotical stability of system. The controlled system can approach to the expected fixed point in the phase space and the target periodic orbits. We also discuss the problem of synchronization including the self synchronization and chaotic synchronization with diverse structures (for Rossler system). In addition, the controlled system can follow a deterministic motion as expected. Computer simulations have illustrated the simpleness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a quantization scheme for a mesoscopic biological equivalent circuit has been given, in which the canonical transformation and the quantum mechanical treatment of a damped harmonic oscillator are employed .The quantum fluctuation of current and voltage of the circuit is discussed. Because of the advent of the quantum fluctuation of current and voltage of the circuit, the quantum effect of circuit have to be taken into account when the bio-electronic chips with biological cells or biological molecules are made.

It is a new method for detection of environmental BTEX in the atmospheric pressure using the technique of laser ionization . The features of the method is high speed, real-time and on-line detection of the concentrations of environmental BTEX . The instrument is simple and does not need complicated vacuum system. Its detection sensitivity is below 5 ppb, time-resolution is 4 s. This method is especially suitable to measurement of exhaust gas of vehicle by roadside. The present paper gives an introduction to the systematic structure, major parameter and some results obtained from a monitoring of atmospheric environmental BTEX in the case of different traffic. The pollution would be more heavy when the traffic is busy, on the contrary, it would be light.

Single InAs layers (2 and 2.5 ML thick, respectively) were grown on (001) GaAs substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Formation of quantum dots was verified by atomic force microscopy (AFM). We studied and compared InAs quantum dots and wetting layer by photoluminescence and time-resolved spectrum. Migration of carriers among quantum dots and wetting layer were investigated, which explained our results well.

A mathematical model is introduced for spontaneous emission and shot-noise of a SASE FEL. A detailed study of statistical properties of the radiation from a SASE FEL operating has been performed with the help of a 1D time-dependent FEL code. The statistical properties of the radiation have been proved that the wider integrals of the instantaneous power follow a T distribution and the narrower integrals of that follow negative exponential distribution. The numerical and analytical results agree well.

Optically activated shape memory alloy (SMA) is adopted to damage controlling of the composite materials in the paper. Experimental setup and results are also given, with SMA imbedded in the composite is adopted as test object. The conclusions are shown from the experiments: optically activated SMA can ensure normal operation of the composite materials by controlling the structure deformation of the composite materials of SMA imbedded;and, by controlling the time of optical activation of SMA, the structure damage of the composite materials of SMA imbedded is actively controlled. It is one of the functions of the smart structures. Results in this research are important to the application of the smart structures of the composite materials.

The Moire fringes are generated by overlapping of two gratings. Because the Moire fringes reflect the defference of two gratings' frequencies, they have the function of amplification of phase and angles. In this experiment, we use two gratings with the same frequency to generate Moire fringes and use them to measure the long focus length of lens. The theoretical formula is deduced. When a lens is placed between two gratings, its Moire fringes are a group of parallel lines, and the relation of the slope of the Moire fringes with the long focus length of the lens is certainty. We use CCD to get the images of the Moire fringes, and figure out the focus length of the lens with them.
