By the local mode-coupled theory, transmission properties of two kinds of fiber probes, the etched taper and the pulled taper, which are used for scanning near-field optical microscopy, have been analyzed and compared. The coupling efficiency distribution along the probe taper and the transmission efficiencies versus the taper length, the tip diameter and the wavelength are given.
