The expression of light pressures produced by laser pulse trains are obtained by solving the density matrix equation. The effect of the pressures on atomic velocity distribution are calculated and its action is compared with that of the CW laser light. The result shows that retardation and cooling would be more effective by using a laser pulse train with appropriate modulation than a CW laser of equal power or even 50% higher.

There are several kinds of nonlinear processes in the interaction between laser light and plane plasmas. Starting from two-wave coupling equations of plasmas, we discuss the instabilities appeared in homogeneous plasmas. If there is damp, the instabilities may appear, and when the damp is so small that can be neglected, there exists only spatial gain. The analytic solution of inhomogeneous plasma with density varying almost linearly are obtained and the conditions for occuring instabilities are discussed.

Spectral sensitization of dichromated gelatin to red light has been carried out using methylene blue as sensitizer. The experimental methods of preparing and processing of sensitized gelatin plate are described. The holographic grating was recorded with the red light fom He-Ne laser, and diffraction efficiency of 84% was obtained. Lippmann hologram reconstructed by white light has been recorded.

This paper reports the high efficient light coupling between stripe-geometry DH GaAlAs lasers and the multimode fibers by using etched-cladding tapered-spherical lenses at the ends of fibers. Mechanism of the high efficient coupling has been analysed theoretically and the lens has been designed. We have obtained a coupling efficiency of 90% experimentally. It is shown that the coupling efficiency of the etched-eladding tapered, spherical lens described here is the highest one. This result agrees with the theoretical analysis.

In a continuously pumped and A-O Q- switched Nd:YAG laser, BNN crystal elements are used for intracavity frequency doubling. With this system, a peak output power of 2.56 KW at 0.53μm, 1KHz repetition rate and 75 ns pulse-width has been obtained. Experiments for application of this system have been carried out, and satisfactory results obtained.

In this paper we describe the principle, arrangements and results of CO2 saturated absorption observed by fluoresence technique. The dependence of signal amplitude of fluoresence dip, width, relative depth on some parameters (pressure of obsorbtion gas amplitude and frequency of modulation, input laser power etc) have been measured and the results are discussed.

Frequency spectrum of atmospheric scintillation is one of the significant statistical characteristics of scintillation. In this paper, we primarily investigate the effects of average wind field and turbulence field, especially nonhomogeneous wind and turbulence on the frequency spectrum of atmospheric scintillation in Shanghai. The results are quite different from those deduced from homogeneous cases.

Besently B. Ruth investigated ultraweak photon emission from biological cells with a precision instrument. It was identified as a type of coherntly stimulated photon emission. It attracts attentions of many scientists. The present paper will discuss the possibility and conditions of the emergence of stimulated photon emission from the physical viewpoint, and condisers it as a new interesting development of the exploration for the secrets of the biological systems.

This paper instroduces an electro-optic shutter made of PLZT 9.2/65/35 ceramic wafer having quadratic transverse electro-optic effect. It can be used in bifrequency laser. Temperature stability at Vπ of PLZT is good and the change rate of Vπ with temperature for PLZT ceramic device is about 0.5%/℃. Practical application, for example in a JD-16 three meter laser length-measuring instrument demonstrates that it is not necessary to orient the axis direction of ceramics in advance. Besides, this device has the adventages of small size, good stability, easy operation and low cost.

In this paper we introduce a Marx bank which has low inductance and the characteristics of high repetition rate discharge, and can be used in TEA CO2 lasers. Its construction is illustrated in detail. The inductance of Marx bank is less than 60 nH, the discharge repetition rate is higher than 40 pps and the lifetime over 107 pulses.

Raman quenching in CS2 under the action of ultrashort light pulses have been investigated experimentally. It is considered that quenching at the medium laser intensity is caused by dissociation of CS2 into carbon and sulphur, and queening at high laser intensity is the result of broadening in self-phase modulation.

A digital light-flux ratiometer is described in which two beams to be measured are detected by a couple of silicon solar cells. The light signals can then be converted linearly into corresponding electronic signals. By adopting analog-to-digital technique, the data can either be displayed directly or recorded during the measurement. At a ratio of 1:15000 between the minimum and maximum detectable light intensity, the nonlinear deviation of opto-electro conversion is found to be less than 0.05% whereas the resolution is 0.1%.
