The combination of a closed-cycle,transverse-flow 2KW CW CO2 laser is described with emphasis on the arcless elecrode construction and glow discharge characteristics.By means of a multi-pin trigger, the glow discharge stability is appreciably increased at more intense input current. The direct current output characteristics of the main supply and the selection of the ballast resistor greatly affect the glow discharge stability and the output power. When the gas flow velocity in the discharge region is 40 m/s,the gas mixture pressure is 46 mmHg,the length of active region is 86 cm,a CW multimode output power of more than 2 KW and an electro-optic efficiency of about 15% are achieved.

Many defects in Nd:YAG crystals grown with Czechratski method are caused by constitutional supercooling and segregation of local solute appearing in the boundary layer near the grown interface.Theseare analyzed and effective measures are proposed to eliminate conditions for constitutional supercooling and solute segregation.

Voltage-current characteristics of GaAs-AlαGa1-αAs DH laser diodes have been measured at different temperatures in the range of 77-300K.Typical characteristics in the forward bias of many investigated diodes can be described by: I=I1+I2=1-s1,exp(AV)+Iexp((p/nkT)V) where A and n are parameters Weakly dependent on temperature.

Physical, chemical and mode-locking properties of pentamethylidyne dye for mode-locking in Nd3+ lasers are given.Several factors which affect the stability of the dye solution with 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent have been found.A method for increasing the stability of the dye solution is presented.Pentamethylidyne dye is proved to be a good and inexpensive dye for mode- locking as comparedwith undecamethylidyne.

Methods for compensating the wave aberration for the high power Nd glass laser beam are summarized, and the methods for adjusting, machining and testing of the aspherical lens for compensation are also given. In the experiments of laser beam aberration compensation, the practical laser beam aberration is decreased from 2.3λ to λ/2~λ/4.

The relationship between divergent angle and structure of the optical fiber with tapered endsfor light transmission is discussed. It is shown that the diverging characteristics for the outputlight are only related to the structure of the output end,and a small divergent angle can be obtainedwith ends of longer length and smaller conical angle. The input end acts as a mode filter whichmakes the divergent angle for the optical fiber independent of the divergent angle for the inputbeam. This featurc is explained by the theory of geometric optics.

A brief review is given on the analysis of photoelastic stress including interferometric and holographic methods. It is pointed out that the successful seperation of isochromic fringes from isopachic ones by using photoelastic method is an experimental breakthrough.A new method is proposed for seperating the isochromic fringes from the isopachic fringes by optical information processing.

The importance of choosing the ratio of the width of light transmitting slit to that of interference fringes is dealt with.It is also pointed out that the largest signal contrast and the largest signal amplitude can be obtained when the width of interference fringes approaches infinite.Besides,a relation between the signal contrast, the signal D.C.shift and the error of counting pulse interval is given Accordingly, the quality requirments for photoelectric output signals can be determined through the tolerance of counting pulse interval.
