Using the single beam Z-scan technique with 38 ps pulse at 1.064 μm, self-defocusing was observed, and the nonlinear refractive index n2 and the real part of χ(3) for octa-PdPc-doped organically modified sol-gels were measured to be 1.1×10-12 esu and 1.6×10-13 esu, respectively. The third-order optical nonlinearity of octa-PdPc-doped organically modified sol-gels is one order of magnitude larger than that of organically modified sol-gel matrix.

A novel, simple self-seeding technique to reduce timing jitter of a GS-DFB laser is proposed. Using this technique, the pulse time jitter is reduced from 5.7 ps to 1.2 ps. The variations of timing jitter under different self-seeding optical power and delay time are measured in the experiment. Both appropriate feedback optical power and delay time are strictly required to suppress the pulse time jitter. When the self-seeding light is injected during turn-on time of GS-DFB laser diode, serious distortion of optical pulses is observed.

A new laser displacement measurement interferometer with nanometric accuracy has been developed. A new method called Coupled Differential Interferometry is proposed. The resolution and the stability of the interferometer are improved by multiplicating the optical path difference (OPD). The new interferometer is simple in concept, symmetric in optical paths, without optical deadpath, easy to set up and align. A λ/1600 resolution and a few nanometer accuracy are achieved within the range of 10 mm.

In this paper, the phase continue scan is combined with the sinusoidal phase modulation to determine the vibration amplitude of object by time-average ESPI. Because the phase continue scan technique is adopted, this method has the advantage of a high anti-disturbance capability without exactly calibrating the optical phase-shifter.

A one-channel optical hit-miss transform processor is proposed, which is based on incoherent correlation with polarization-encoding method to code input image and structuring element pair and electronic thresholding. The polarization-encoding-based rank-order HMT, which yields better performance in the presence of noise and clutter, can be carried out by the using variable levels. Experimental results are also given.

This paper studies the intraband crosstalk mechanisms in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) ring networks. In WDM ring networks, the crosstalk analysis can be simplified to the single crosstalk source case. The exact BER expressions of single crosstalk path are derived from the probability density function of the output current in the optical receiver. The calculated crosstalk penalties are in good agreement with the experimental data.

A hollow cylindrical electrode was employed to detect the electrical signal of laser-induced plasma during YAG-pulse laser welding of Al and 45# steel. The theoeritical model has been established for analysis of the plasma region and compared with the experiments. The research results show that the current exhibit a saturation effect in the I-V curves of plasma signal with increasing voltage in the negative voltage region, and the plasma temperature is higher than the vaporzation temperature of welded materials.

The AE (acoustic emission) signals of plasma during laser welding were studied using wavelet analysis. Comparing AE signals in welding process with and without joint gap or misalignment problem, the significant differences in AE signals can be observed. The amplitude of low-frequency component of AE signals is fallen down remarkably when the welding defects occur. The same phenomena are also observed in the energy in the frequency band from 1562 Hz to 6250 Hz. Considering that wavelet analysis can decompose the AE signals into several frequency bands, the characteristic information can be extracted, which can be used to implement process-control of laser welding.

Using the theory of electron-conformation interaction, this paper makes a mole-level theory analytical study on ILLLIT′s effects on plasminogen-plasmin system. The results of theoretical analysis indicate that ILLLIT surely can enhance the activity of plasminogen activator, which is advantageous to decreasing the aggregate degree of erythrocyte.

A new type of CO2laser tube has been designed by using a plasma tube having rectangular discharge cross-section and is excited by both the axial glow discharge and the transverse silent discharge. In this paper, the principle of design is described and the transverse distribution of electron concentration in the laser tube is discussed theoretically. Furthermore, its working characteristics are studied experimentally and compared with those excited by the only DC glow discharge. Under the action of transverse silent discharge, the laser power, the gas-filled pressure and the fraction of N2in the laser are increased obviously, the laser efficiency is increased, too. Both the laser power and efficiency can be simultaneously optimized by choicing the discharge current.

Considering the diffusion of heat generated by semiconductor lasers in the heat sink, the thermal interaction among single devices in the array have been analyzed. The idea of the thermal interaction caused from the diffusion of heat current is proposed. From analyses, how to determine the separation between upper and lower devices in the 2D array and how to select the duty cycle in the pulsed operation have been studied. The result of analyses has been applied to design the 1.55 μm wavelength semiconductor laser array. Two kinds of 2D arrays of 2×2, 2×4 consisted of single devices with leaky waveguide structure with their pulsed peak power output of 7 W and 11 W, respectively, have been completed.

In order to increase the optical output power of semiconductor superluminescent devices, a direct coupling method has been used to monolithically integrate the superluminescent diode (SLD) with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). By this means, a 1.3 μm InGaAsP/InP integrated superluminescent light sources have been fabricated. 50 mW superluminescent output power is obtained in pulsed condition. The spectral width at full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 28.9 nm, the optical gain of SOA is about 19 dB.

It is found that additional insertion of a SF-57 glass with a high nonlinear refractive index in the Ti:sapphire ring laser cavity can create an adjustable SPM. Removing the chirp by an appropriate GVD, the mode-locking pulses can be shortened from 30 fs to 16 fs, corresponding to a compression ratio of 47%.

A quadrupled output of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (266 nm) was used for ablating semiconductor materials. The ions formed during ablating were analyzed by using a reflective time of flight mass spectrometer. Some characteristics of laser ablation of semiconductor materials, such as ion yields versus laser power, the threshold of laser irradiance, the laser power dependence of the resolution of mass spectra and the shift of peak positions were reported. Experimental results showed that P2+ dimmer dominates in all mass spectra of InP. Typical mass spectra of Al0.3Ga0.7As and InP are shown.

Using the ultrasonic technique with high precision, the sound velocities of tetragonal crystal YVO4, 1at-% Nd:YVO4and 2at-% Nd:YVO4have been measured at the ambient temperature and pressure by the pulse echo overlap method. Six independent second order elastic constants (C11,C44,C66,C33,C12and C13) of crystals and Debye temperature ΘD have been obtained from longitudinal and shear velocities propagated along different orientations. The results indicate no change of these parameteres with different Nd3+ concentrations. An abnormal phenomena on C66 was observed with putting a pair of compressive force on (010) faces of the crystal along polarisation direction [010] of the transducer.

Six pentamethylidene IR dyes with a peak absorption wavelength at 1.06 μm (including two asymmetric dyes) were synthesized for a mode-locking laser. The structure was demonstrated by IR, H1NMR and element analysis. The absorption wavelength varied from 1052 nm to 1095 nm was tested in the solution of 1,2-dichloroethane. A stable laser pulse with a duration of 27~36 ps was observed by using the dyes. The dyes are successfully proved to be used as a collide-pulse mode-locking (CPM) dye for Nd3+:YAG lasers.

Energy transfers and upconversion fluorescence spectroscopy in Tm3+-Yb3+co-doped AlF3-based flouride glass, excited at 970 nm, is experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the concentration quenching of blue fluorescence at 476 nm is stronger than that of infrared light at 793 nm. In AYF and AZF glass, the optimum content of Tm3+for 476 nm emission is about 0.1 mol-%, while for 793 nm emission is 0.3~5 mol-%. The concentration quenching of Yb3+to upconvertion fluorescence is also observed. It is maybe due to the back-energy transfer from the 3F4 level of Tm3+to the 2F5/2 level of Yb3+.
