Utilizing an optical ring laser as the optical source, and a dispersion shifted fiber as the nonlinear material, a supercontinuum optical spectrum over 40 nm width was successfully generated. The WDM signals with a wavelength separation of 3.2 nm from the 12 wavelength channels each transmitting 30~40 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 2.5 GHz are generated.

The relation of the crystal extinction ratio and stress-induced birefringence phase diffrence are analyzed in details. The method making use of a single 1/4 wave plate for measuring crystal extinction ratio is reported. The cumputational formula and testing results are given. The uncertainty is analyzed and it shows that the measuring uncertainty of this method is less than that of the method usually used.

A time-resovled ultrasensitive detection technique of probing cooperative vibronic spectra of rare earth ions is described. Coordination of terbium ion with arginine in low concentration solutions is studied and the coordination number variation of water molecules with pH value in these solutions is determined quantitatively with this technique. It is concluded that arginine can coordinate with terbium ion when pH>1, with the pH value of the solutions increasing, the coordination number of arginine increases.

A new algorithm in which the defined hit-miss transform is reformulated by a grayscale erosion of the image with a grayscale structural element of three levels is developed. A necessary condition is defined to choose the correct intermediate grayscale level in the structural element. Then a single-channel incoherent optical correlator with only an image and a structural element is developed to execute the hit-miss transform in parallel by one step thresholding. Experimental results for the face recognition are demonstrated.

The performance of double-pulsed digital speckle pattern interferometry based on a Nd∶YAG laser system and spatial phase-shift algorithm is analyzed in detail, which involves the sampling error, digitization error, phase-shift error and the error caused by random speckle noise. The computer simulations are also used to give an entire statistical estimation of errors and simulation results show good agreement with a theoretical analysis.

The major methods of wave-front reconstruction are fringe tracing and phase-shifting. The defaults exist in the two methods. The fringe tracing method acquires the prior distribution characteristics of the field to reconstruct the whole wave-front. The phase shifting method needs more than three interferograms on the same view angle. In this paper, a phase unwrapping method is applied to reconstruct the wave-front basing on one interferogram. The method used in coherence measurement is based on Furrier transform. The reconstruction result is compared to the result acquired with the fringe tracing method.

In this paper, a new quantity, normalized nonlinear error (NNE) is proposed for the first time to our knowledge for the estimation of the gray scale fidelity of images retrieved from volume holograms stored in photorefractive Fe∶LiNbO3 crystals. Based on this, the dependence of gray scale fidelity on recording object-reference beam ratios is experimentally investigated, and the results agree well with theoretical predictions. The dynamic evolution of the normalized nonlinear error during hologram recording is also studied. The results show that a satisfactory gray scale fidelity can be obtained as long as the recording beam ratio is carefully chosen, even if the recording time is short, hence the diffraction efficiency is quite low.

The apoptosis of the mice thymocytes was induced with low power helium-neon laser irradiation in vitro. Flow cytomytry analysis of the mice thymocytes was detected by staining cells with a combination of Annexin V-FITC and propium iodide (PI) or rhodamine 123 (Rh123) and PI to show the early event of the apoptosis. The cellular morphology of the staining cells was observed by the transmission electron microscope. The early phase apoptosis of the thymocytes increased obviously after 60 min He-Ne laser (light dose 47.694~51.822 J/cm2) irradiation. With the laser irradiation time prolonged and the light dose increased, the increase of the percentage of the early phase apoptosis of the thymocytes was observed. It shows that the thymocytes after the He-Ne laser irradiation show loss of asymmetry of the phospholipids on the plasma membrane, leading to exposure of phosphatidylserine on the outer surface, that is expressed with the Annexin V positive. The mitochondrial function of the thymocytes is lost, therefore mitochondrial transmembrane potential is markedly decreased. The Rh123 retention is decreased in the mitochondria, and fluorescence intensity is significantly decreased.

This paper reports on the fidelity of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering of single-cell with one focus (SCOF) and single-cell with two focuses (SCTF). The results showed that in the case of SCOF the fidelity of SBS decreased slightly with the pump energy increasing, but for the SCTF, the fidelity is sensitive to the length of the two focuses. When the length is short, the fedility is almost unchanged, however, when the length is long, the fidelity increased and the biggest enhencement is up to 13%. An explanation to this phenomenon is given. The experimental results support this interpretation.

An experiment which deals with pressure effects on the output characteristics of a small radial copper vapor laser is described. When the buffer gas pressure is increased from 2.0 kPa to 10.0 kPa, the plasma tube resistance increases. At the optimal pressure about 2.7 kPa, the output power has a maximum. Moreover, following the increasing of the gas pressure, the pulse duration time first decreases and later increases, and the critical pressure is 4.7 kPa. The intensity profile of the laser output shows a lower axial intensity and a higher intensity on the tube wall at the higher pressure.

By the theory of syntonic mode-selecting in the compound ring in which a narrow-band taped fiber filter is embedded and by the uncoupling effect on the bidirectionally operating syntonic mode in the ring of the self-provided saturable absorption under the near threshold operation, a bidirectional, simultaneous, single-mode operating compact Er-doped fiber ring laser with the same frequency is realized, the measurement of rotation sensing of the all fiber ring laser is performed.

In this paper, a new method is proposed for the numerical simulation of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA′s), which are modeled as homogeneously broadened two-level systems. The basic point of the method is to first solve out the population inversion along the erbium-doped fiber, then calculate other amplifier properties. This approach is highly efficient and accurate for the simulation of various complex-structure EDFA′s with arbitrary setup of modeling parameters. Fiber background loss or excited state absorption can also be considered. Based on the accurate measurement of fiber parameters, a comparison between the experimental and simulated results shows reasonable agreement.

A Theory of noninversion lasing in an open V-type three-level system is presented. The steady-state analysis shows that under certain conditions, noninversion lasing can be realized without an additional pump which is required by noninversion lasing in a general closed V-type three-level system. The dependence of the gain behavior of the system on Rabi frequency of the driving field and other parameters is also illustrated and analyzed.

The most biological tissues are a kind of turbid media. After transmitting through the turbid media, the laser pulse energy will be attenuated and the pulse shape will be changed by scattering and absorption. Besides, the ultrashort laser pulse will be widened by the diffusive scattering. The various medium parameters have different influence on the transmission of the laser pulse. Based on the diffusion approximation theory, this paper researched quantitatively the influence of the thickness d, the absorption coefficient μa, the scattering coefficient μs, and the anisotropy coefficient g on the ultrashort laser pulse transmission througt turbid media.

The surface pressure-area isotherms of a new type of two legged inert amiphiphilic molecule 1. 10-bistearyl-4.6.13.15-tetraene-8-nitrogen-6(abbreviated as NC) monolayers at the air-water interface in the subphase containing divalent ions (Cd2+,Ba2+,Co2+) and the effects of divalent ions in the subphase on the UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and optical nonlinear properties of Y-type hemicyanine/NC interleaving Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers were investigated. The π-A isotherms of NC molecules are strongly dependent on the divalent ions in the subphase. It was found that the peak positions of absorption and steady state fluorescence spectra of the alternating multilayers and the optical second harmonic intensity varied with the divalent ions in the subphase. The 2ω resonance effect of β was responsible for the observed χ(2) enhancement.
