This paper describes a improved Mexican-hat wavelet transform with an optical 4f correlator. An optically modified Mexican-hat wavelet matched filter is created by the use of computer-generated holography (CGH). Experimental results for 1-D and 2-D wavelet transform are obtained. The experimental results accord with the numerical results of ref.[8] very well. The main advantage of the proposed method lies in that any types of wavelet matched filters can be fabricated and their 2-D wavelet transform can be realized.

An optimized design of bandwidth of a F-P filter in ASK modulation WDM transmission systems is studied in this paper. The main interference on SNR of a long haul WDM transmission system is analyzed. An optimal bandwidth of F-P filter in a long haul ASK modulation WDM system is found, and the numerical simulation confirms the result.

GSN is a generalization of shuffle-exchange networks and it can represent a family of network structures (including ShuffleNet & de Bruijn graph) for an arbitrary number of nodes. GSN employs a regular interconnection graph with highly desirable properties and it can serve as a logical (virtual), multihop topology for constructing the next generation of lightwave networks using wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). GSN can be divided into two classes: extra-stage and reduced-stage. The architecture of the GSN is introduced briefly. Then, the performance of the GSN is analyzed. At last an algorithm for computing the average hop distance for the reduced-stage GSN is proposed in this paper.

CO2 laser is a desirable tool to drill ceramics such as Al2O3. Drilling of Al2O3 ceramics has several problems to be solved: such as high melting point, high hardness degree and crack coming from thermal shock. This study investigates the influence of factors such as frequency of pulses, laser average power and the pressure of assistant air on the quality of drilling. Their mutual influence on the hole size is discussed.

This paper describes the CO2 laser grooving technology with assisted oxygen for the cylinder casing (45# carbon steel). The cooling method that the workpiece is submerged under water is developed so that the irregular combustion phenomenon caused by excessive heat from the former grooving is effectively restrained. The testing results about the organization performances of the laser-grooving body and the consistency of the groove depth and width by dissecting the groove body are presented.

The coating zone (Ni-Cr-Al) on an aluminum alloy surface was clad by a 5 kW CO2 laser. The SEM and TEM observation revealed that there were amorphous structures in the laser cladding. The amorphous structures exhibited two different morphologies. One was space curved plate-like, which existed in the white web-like structures. The other was fir leaf-like, which existed in the grain-like structures.

On the basis of an analysis on the feeding pattern of the coating material and its behavior in the laser beam during the process of laser coating with automatic powder feeding, a heat equilibrium equation was established and expressions relating the parameters in the process were obtained. The parameters include the grain size of the coating material, its distance of motion in the beam, heating temperature and power density. It is pointed out that the necessary condition for obtaining optimum coating in the process with automatic powder feeding is that from the instant of the powder grains entering the laser beam to the instant that the grains reach the substrate surface, the powder grains must be persistently within the laser beam to fulfill the above condition. The laser beam must have enough width along the scanning direction, and this width can be calculated by the expression suggested in this paper. Finally, the principle for matching the process parameters to obtain an optimum coating is presented.

Effect of a 510.6 nm laser on the proliferation of hematopoietic cells in human umbilical cord blood was studied. Mononuclear hematopoietic cells were prepared from human umbilical cord blood, and cultured with CSF in vitro, the GM-CFUc was 18.6±12.6/104. If the mononuclear cells were cultured with CSF which was prepared by laser irradiated cells, the GM-CFUc was 40.5±20.2/104. If the mononuclear cells were irradiated by laser and then cultured with CSF, the GM-CFUc was 36.5±18.5/104. If both the mononuclear cells and the cells for CSF preparation were irradiated by laser, the GM-CFUc was increased significantly, it was 57.4±41.2/104.

The theoretical and experimental study on the single-longitudinal-mode of an injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator is presented. The numerical result shows that the frequency of the parametric output was determined by the longitudinal mode frequency of the cavity, if the frequency shift of the seeder was smaller than the axial mode separation. It was supported by an experiment on a single-longitudinal-mode BBO OPO which was seeded by a multi-longitudinal-mode He-Ne laser.

InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs strained layer quantum well lasers with a small vertical divergence angle and low light power density are designed; and ridge waveguide parameters resulting in fundamental transverse mode operation are calculated. The InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs strained layer quantum well lasers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Ridge waveguide InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs strained layer quantum well lasers operating in the fundamental transverse mode up to 140 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm were fabricated. The lasers exhibit a differential quantum efficiency of 0.8W/A, a vertical divergence angle of 28° and a parallel divergence angle of 6.8°.

The temporal characteristics of Brillouin back scattering pulses from a single cell with focus geometry were investigated experimentally. The temporal variation of the phase conjugation fidelity and the shaping pulse with high contrast using two cells were also observed. The results show that the profile of the reflected pulse is closely related to pump energy and focal length of the lens. The pulse start point is not stable and the variation is about 1.5 ns. The pulse shaping using a multi cell scheme is practicable in principle.

A 5-line fitting method was established to determine the scaling region of the power spectrum of the log-intensity of a laser beam in the turbulent atmosphere. From the relationship between the scaling exponent and the scintillation index we found that the characteristic of the power spectrum is different for the winter and the summer. In most cases the scaling exponents depart from theoretical values for a local isotropic turbulent medium.

The relation among RMS errors of wavefront, beam quality factor β and Strehl ratio is interesting in an optical system and the laser beam quality analysis. In this paper, this relation is researched, and the optimal formula is established by using numerical analysis. As an example, the relation between r0 and β is given under the Kolmogroff atmospheric turbulence model.

In this paper the direct and indirect Yb3+ sensitized up-conversion luminescence of 1G4 level of Tm3+ ion in Tm0.03Yb0.18La0.79P5O14 and Tm(0.1)Yb(3)∶ZBLAN glasses is reported. The results indicate that the upconversion luminescence intensity in the pentaphosphate glass is much enhanced and nearly comparable to that in the ZBLAN glass when the glass is excited by the indirect upconversion sensitized method. This work and the results may promote the upconversion research to practical application.

In this paper the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) in the organic material ZnTBP/CA/PhR is reported. The energy-level is studied using the rate equation theory and it is found that the absorption cross section of the first excited triplet state should be bigger than that of the ground state in RSA process. It is proved by the experiment in which an Ar+ laser and a dye laser focused onto the sample together. The RSA in this material can be operated with a continuous-wave laser of moderate energy.
