This paper describes the experimental results of an all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber Michelson interferometer system. In expriment, we used a Panda PM fiber, PM polarizors fabricated through lapping and polishing (extinction ratio 3 dB, loss<0. 5 dB) , and a tapered fusion PM coupler (extinction ratio 20-25 dB, loss<1 dB). The operating point is maintained through the use of a piezoelectric phase modulator. The phase detection sensitivity has been found to be better than 10-3rad over a certain frequency range.

In this paper, a compact temperature- compensated fiber grating package is proposed. The package comprises two materials with different thermal expansion coefficients. The releasing strain can compensate the temperature dependent drift of the Bragg wavelength over the range from - 20-40℃. The total variation in wavelength is less then 0.12 nm, 1/6 of the uncompensated fiber grating.

On the basis of the theory of wave-optics, a theoretical model used to compute the polarization-dependent loss of a polarization-independent isolator is established. Some factors which influence the polarization-dependent loss of the isolator are discussed. Experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, using the generalized Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral and statistical-optics method, the properties of laser beams with amplitude modulation and phase fluctuations propagating through a spatial filter have been studied in detail. The condition for the optimum pinhole size of the spatial filter has been analyzed. Numerical calculations have shown the dependence of the optimum pinhole size on the Fresnel number of the system, the truncation parameter and the phase fluctuation parameter.

In a beam-gas cell arrangement the absolute cross sections for the reactions of metastable Xe(3P0) and Xe(3P2) atoms with N2 were measured by means of a pulsed laser pumping technique. The applicability of this experimental method in energy transfer and chemical reactions involving metastable atoms is briefly discussed.

Based on a commercially available audio speaker a real- time rapid scanning interferometric SHG autocorreiator that may monitor both the pulse-width and frequency sweep in ultrashort laser pulses is reported. The repetition rate of sweeping is 1-20 Hz, and the measurement error is below 3 fs. This apparatus can be used widely for monitoring and measuring interferometric autocorrelation traces of femtosecond pulses generated from self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser and those from any other kind of femtosecond pulse lasers.

In this paper, a new detecting system for the study of damage of optical materials is described, which consists of a digital camera and a Nomarski polarize interferometer. The automatization of the detecting process is realized by interfacing the system with a computer. The analysis is in good agreement with the experimental data.>

We have analyzed the interaction between lightwave and microwave in polymeric electrooptic modulators. Local poling structure was suggested to apply to the waveguide modulators, which will enhance the interaction between lightwave and microwave and improve the modulation efficiency considerably. In addition, instead of the coplanar electrode, the microstrip line was proposed to be the modulating electrode. Slotline, used as the ground electrode, will make the performance of the device adjustable and compensated by application of different substrates. The parameters used for optimization of the device then increase. At last, the influence of geometric parameters on the overlap integral between light wave and microwave was shown.

The phase matching technique between the signal and the local oscillator (LO) wave is analysed according to demands for the heterodyne detection system design. It shows that the focused signal wave speckle size dominates the output SNR when it doesn't coincide with the focused LO beam waist, and the phase matching becomes more difficult for the shorter wavelength. For large probe beam divergence the SNR is relatively poor, and even a streaky signal process is predicted if a point target is scanned across. The major conclusions from the analysis above are verified by an experiment.

In this paper, a quantum scattering theory is given to calculate the performances of the X- ray multilayer Bragg- Fresnel lens recently developed for X- ray optics. The scattering amplitude, diffraction pattern, diffraction efficiency and scattered power density are derived. A computer program worked out by the authors is introduced and the design of Bragg-Fresnel optics is also given.

Based on diffraction theory, this paper discusses the diffraction formulas and the phase change brought about by the light which passes through a lens. A computer algorithm that uses FFT to simulate the optics system is presented, and the results of the simulation are given. It would be important for design of coherent optical systems.

The intracavity pulse-chirp compensation has been optimized by introducing two-way chirp compensation in a self-mode-locked Ti: sapphire laser. This allows 36 fs, 200 mW pulses to be generated with a very low pump power of 2.4 W.

In this paper, we analyse the self-starting mechanism of a fiber ring soliton laser and the dependence of the soliton width as well as its stability on laser parameters. By solving the evolution equations, we have obtianed the stable conditions and analytic expressions for soliton width of the laser.

Using solid state molecular beam epitaxy technology we have grown the high quality InGaAs/GaAs strained quantum well materials and fabricated quantum well lasers. The threshold current and differential quantum efficiency of the ridge wavegiude quantum well lasers with coated films are 15 mA and 0. 8 W/A, respectively. The linear output power is more than 150 mW, and 100 mW and larger fundamental mode output power is achieved. Through the coupling with an Er-doped fiber, the output power of 40~60 mW has been demonstrated, and the emitting wavelength is near 977 nm.

A diode-pumped, single-frequency,intracavity frequency-doubled CW laser has been demonstrated using a 20 mm cavity consisting of a novel birefringent filter formed by a Brewster angle cut piece of Nd:YAG and a KTP doubling crystal. 4 mW at 532 nm and about 50 mW at 1064 nm single-frequency output powers have been obtained for a 500 mW incident power.

Shaping the beam space distribution of a laser diode using two types pumping optics is reported. The dependence of the output characteristics of a Nd : YAG laser on different ellipticities and collimation of the pumping beam is analyzed. The efficiency is strongly increased when the ellipticity goes to 1. The output power is 1. 13 W with the pumping power 2. 42 W, and the slope efficiency is 50%. In addition, the comparison of slope efficiency between two YAG crystals of different Nd concentrations is performed.

The threshold characteristics of a Raman generator pumped by ns pulses of an excimer laser are investigated experimentally. The definition cf the threshold for stimulated Raman scattering is discussed in detail. The threshold for stimulated Ran an scattering in hydrogen pumped by the KrF excimer laser with a 25 ns pulse width is measured at different focal lengths and for different pressures of H2. At the end, the effects of focal length and four-waves-mixing on the threshold are analyzed.

Amorphous carbon-polyimide composite thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition for the first time. The lower turn-on field of 7 V/μm, which was less than that of the previously reported amorphous diamond film, was obtained from the composite films and the emission current density was 1. 2 mA/cm2 which could be comparable with that of the chemical vapor deposied diamond films. The locations of electron emission sites were observed using a transparent conducting anode techanique, and then the effect of the surface microstructure on electron emission could be futher understood. The composite films could be competent for cold emitters applied in flat panel displays.
