A nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) has been novelly used to speed up the rise time of high voltage (3 kV) pulses generated from a GaAs photoconductive switch. A 3 kV shock-wave pulse with rise time less than 400 ps has been obtained. The shock-wave theory of the NLTL is reviewed and practical implementations and limitations are introduced and discussed.

A multi-path F-P interferometric system is designed which is used to obtain the multidirectional interferograms of a three-dimensional refractive index field by the computer simulation. The results show that if the sine reconstructed algorithm is used to reconstruct the-three-dimensional refractive index field, a precision of 2. 24 per cent can be reached with 6 F-P interferograms. As an example of application, this system is used to obtain multidirectional interferograms of a three-peak temperature field. The distribution of the three-dimensional refractive index is reconstructed.

The theory of Near Field Optical Microscopy (NFOM) is reviewed. A real system is presented with which the fish scale sample is imaged and analyzed. The results show that NFOM can be applied to study transparent and semi- transparent materials, especially, for living materials. Bioelectret properties caused by orderly orientational arrangement of collagen molecules is proved. By NFOM the bioholographic phenomenon is observed for the first time in μm-sized fish scale plates.

The bending loss in Ge-Ag-Ni waveguide as a function of waveguide radius is disscussed. The advantages of the small-sectional radius waveguide are discribed, and a novel method of RF sputterins for fabrication of hollow waveguides with small diameters is proposed. Finally, some samples have been fabricated using the method and the transmitunces of the samples with different waveguide diameters are presented and compared.

It is reported for the first times that prostate samples of rabbits are irradiated by a Xecl excimer laser (308nm).The ablation effects of the prostates of the rabbits are observed with different laser pulse repetition rates and two lasing media. The damase threshold of 400 mJ/ cm2 is measured. It is shown that the excimer laser has the characteristics of good ablation effect, light damage for surrounding tissues and easy control, thus presenting a practical clinical value.

With a finite-element method, the relationships among ambient temperature and writing power, as well as the temperature distribution in the mangeto-optical(MO) film are discussed. On the basis of a numerical analysis, the optimum recording condition adapted for different ambient temperatures is derived. Also, the analysis presents an access for optimizing the readout characteristics of MO disks at different ambient temperatures.

The formation mechanism of optical generalized-carrier fringes and the digital demodulation technique are investigated theoretically and experimentally. An optical technique for modulating generalised-carrier fringe patterns is described. The results of digital demodulation with computer simulation and experiments show good agreement with a theoretical analysis.

A new kind of electrical addressed four-function multiple quantum wells (MQW) interchange nodes based on an optical crossover switching network has been proposed. Using two arrays of 1 × & MQW asymmetric Fabry-Perot reflection modulators, four pairs of interchange nodes are set up, and the first stage of the optical crossover switching network (N=8) is realized.

In this paper, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to investigate the microstructure of organic films in optical recording. Bubbles are found for phthalocyanine thin films after laser irradiation. Laser pulses of different energies produce bubbles of various minute structures. The disc performance closely correlates with the sizes of the bubbles. It is demonstrated that STM is a powerful tool to investigate the microstructure of the optical disc.

A Ti:sapphire laser pumpedby a internal frequency-doubled acouto-optic Qswitched Nd:YAG laser has been designed. The maximum output achieved is 7.71 W. The conversion effidency of 33% at 7.4 W has been obtained. And, by numerical simulatioll, we have studied the operational characteristics of the Ti:sapphire laser. The results of the numerical calculation accord with the experimentul results.

Experimental results on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) pumped by a 1477 nm laser diode are reported. Gain and time characteristics of EDFA are investigated. A maximum gain of 23 dB has been obtained at 1520 nm, with pump efficiency being ~2.28 dB/mW.

The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and parametric four-wave-mixing (PFWM) in barium vapor are studied under the experimental conditions of two-photon resonance. The mechanisms responsible for this competition can be attributed to the destructive interference between ASE and PFWM.

In this paper, a differential geometrical method is employed to study the propagation properties of light beams. Starting from the curvature of 3- dimensional Riemannian manifold, a new complex space which can contain the information of both geometrical optics and wave optics is built.
