In this paper, the depolarization mechanism of a monochromatic light crystalline quartz depolarizer is studied. The depolarization degree, which is a physical Paramter that shows the depolarization character of a depolarizer, is defined. The depolarization degree is measured in the spectrum region of 440 ̄~ 920 nm.The results show that if the structural angle of the depolarizer is suitable or the size of the incident ray is suitably controlled, the best depolarization can be achieved for a linearly polarized light.

Fabrication and eharacterization of proton-exchanged waveguides of MgO: LiNbO3doped with different contents of MgO are reported. The step-like refractive indexprofiles are measured and calculated for Z- cut MgO: LiNbO3 waveguides at differrent wavelengths and the experimental results are shown consistent with each other. Thedispersive relation of refractive index increments is given, and it is shown that the indexincrements and the diffusion coefficients at the same temperature decrease with the content of MgO in the crystal increased. The mechanisms of the effects of MgO on waveguide properties are discussed finally.

A core-cladding waveguide structure of the Lithium niobate single crystal fiber with parabolic refractive index profile is achieved by a Mg-ion indiffusion process. The propagstion loss of the cladded crystal fiber is measured, and its loss coefficient is about 14 dB/cm lower than that of the uncladded crystal fiber. The output optical beam patterns of the cladded and uncladded crystal fibers are observed. It is found that three ridges of the cladded crystal fiber core have disappered gtadually in the Mg-ion indiffusion process.

An incident CO2laser beam into a low pressure SF6 cell was frequency modulated by an external dithering mirror through the Doppler effect. The differential spectrum ofSF6has been detected by utilizing the phase-sensitive technique. The frequency differencesamong several saturated absorption lines of SF6 were precisely measured. The practicalsignificance of the method is discussed.

Laser-induced chemical etching of the InP (100) surface with a chlorinemolecular is investigated using a Nd: YAG laser at 1064 um. The mass and velocitydistributions Of reaction Products at different surface temperatures (290 K and 560 K) are determined by the time-resolved mass spectrometry. Both laser fluence and the normalcomponent of the incident Cl2 molecules' translational energy enhance the near-IR laserinduced etching reaction Of the InP (100) surface.A chemical reaction mechanism isproposed that a rate determined step might be the controlling of factor the laser-induced thermal desorption of the adsorbed surface reaction products.

Concentration-dependent polarzed excitation, fluorescence and absorption spectra of Ti:Al2o3 crystals were measured at room temperature with the Ti3+ ion doped levels from 0.03 wt-% to 0.45 wt-%. Line shape distortion in polarized excitation spectra, indicated as the increasing of the intensity ratio of the shoulder to Peak and spectral broadering at longer wavelength side, were found as the Ti3+ ion concentration increased, whereas such phenomena did not emerge in the polarized absorption spectra at the same band. It is experimentally convinced that no Ti3+ ion pairs were formed even for the highestly doped sample in our experiment.

Some samples of Al-Si alloy with different silicon Percentage were treated by overlapped scanning with a 2 kW CO2 laser. The structures of the Al-Si alloys after laserremelting treatment were examined by SEM and TEM.The anodic polarization curves of theAl-Si alloy samples treated by laser were measured in different corrosion solutions. Someeffects on corrosion resistance of Al-Si alloys treated by laser are discussed. Experimentalresults show that laser treatment benefits corrosion resistance of Al-Si alloy in the 10% H2SO4 and 10% HNO3 solutions; but it basically dosen't improve corrosion resistance in the 10% HCl and 5% NaCl solutions.

Ni-Cr-B-Si+WC alloys were coated on the surface of the air-blower vanes bylaser cladding at 3.5×104 W/cm2Power density and 0.06 s time-Period. The bonding areabetween alloy and matrix shows metallurgical combination. The laser cladded compact andeven structural coating possesses great hardness and high resistance to abrasion and corrosionof acids. It has been tested in practice that the Properties of vanes with laser cladded coatingare remarkably better than those of vanes of the steel 15 MnV.

The analytic results of TEM modes in an unstable resonator with Gaussian variable reflectivity mirror are given. The output characteristics of a Φ 20 mm Nd: glass laser using a resonator of this kind are studied experimentally. The output beam has a near diffraction-limited divergence of 0.18 mrad and about 10 J energy. Its misalignment stability is studied, too.

An analytical expression was given of radial temperature distribution in a gas discharge tube of a copper vapor laser. The relation between radial temperature distribution and input electrical power or thermal conductivity of the buffer has been discribed. The agreement between theoretical analyses and experimental results shows the importance of controlling the input electrical power.

A compact model for the description of ultra-short pulse driven X-ray lasers in Li-like ions is established. Initial electron density, electron temperature and distribution of plasma of the fibre forget irradiated by ultra-short pulses have been related to the intensity and pulse duration of driving lasers and fibre radius.Evolution of Li-like aluminum ion Xray laser gains with time is investigated as well as peak gain dependencies upon the drivinglaser pulse intensity and the duration and fibre radius.
