This paper deals with the properties of narrow He-Ne discharge plasma in which the Avail condition is considered. Taking into consideration the wall sheath at various currents, the electron temperature, spatial density distribution and voltage-current characteristics are calculated. The calculation agrees with the experimental results.

The characteristics tunability of CO2 waveguide lasers have been analyzed theoretically and experimentally. It has been shown that the frequency tuning on one line can only be realized under given conditions. The tuning range is the function of the laser gain, total loss, gas pressure and gas mixture, as well as the discharge current.

In a low-resolution detecting system, the high-resolution spectra of the atomic neon transitions of 2p3-4s1/1 and 2p7-4d3 have been observed indirectly by means of laser-excited atomic fluorescence spectrometry for the first time. It further confirms that the neon line at 5919.037 is identified to the transition of 2p7-4d3.

The development of double Pookols cells with an aperture of 11x12mm2 is described and the performances measured. It has been used to select single short laser pulses from a mode-locked TEA CO2 laser. The rise time of a laser pulse switched-out from the smooth long pulse of a single longitudinal mode hybrid TEA CO2 laser is less thau 1 ns.

Local temperature of solid surface can be obtained by the intonsity ratio between Stokes Bumnn scattering and anti-Stokcs Banian scattering from samples. It is a real time temperature measurement without touching the object. It needs no calibration, but derives from spectroscopic measurement. It meets the requirements of surface physics and new technology development of VLSI. A steady state measurement using a low power laser has been achieved. The analysis and correction of its errors are given.

The frequency stabilization of dye laser is described. The laser frequency is stabilized to the side of a transmision curve of an optical cavity by means of the usual differential servo technique. With a PZT cavity mirror driven by fast servo electronics and a galvoplate driven by slow servo electronics, the linewidth of the jet stream dye laser is reduced to 1 MHz. Experimental result is presented on the measurement of saturation spectroseopy of sodium D1 line.
