A XeCl excimer laser excited by longitudinal gas discharge is reported. The laser output was increased by means of preionization to improve the discharge uniformity. The main performances of the laser output were measured. The laser pulse duration was 35 ns and the maximum laser energy being 317μJ with an efficiency of 0.29%.

A planar self-waveguiding dye laser driven by a four xenon flashlamp system with an average output power of 3 W at 30 pps is presented. The laser takes advantage of the non-uniform distibutrion of the refractive index by the pumping pulse in the active medium, and allows full utilization of the highest gain region of the dye solution.

The design and experimental results of a new polarization-independent optical circulator are reported. It consists of a polarizing splitter, a polarizing combiner, a Faraday rotator and a half-wave plate. Insertion losses of 2.8 db and isolation of 18-35 db were obtained for different polarization directions of incident light at 1.37μ/m.

The study of power output from free electron lasers (FEL) has shown that to gain higher output power the FEL at infrared region is better than those at the ultraviolet. Superradiation generation, operational conditions have been obtained in which the pulse width of the relativistic electron beam and the transmission of resonator eavity were studied The effectof energv divergency of the relativistic electron beam △r0/r0 on the energy conversion ef flcieney hasalso been discussed.

Measurement and analysis have been made on the target voltage induced by the effect of spatial charge seperation at various power densities. Target voltage of several KVs and the duration of or within a few nanoseconds have been measured when a 1.06μm laser beam (100 ps) is incident normally on an Al plane target at the power density ranging from 2 × 1014 to 8 × 1014W/cm2.

Investigating the speckle pattern of a cross-slit theoretically and experimentally, we note in this paper that the object surface speckle pattern recorded on the recording plate has a 2-D gratingwise structure. After performing an optical Fourier transform on it, at the Fourier transform plane there appears a particular optical intensity distribution, a bright sharp cross-shape halo superimposed on a uniform square-shaped halo. Hence, the laser speckle photography with a cross-slit aperture will offer good quality interferogram with high contrast, low noise, and high sensitivity. Furthermore, the cross-shaped halo facilitates the measurement of fixing the original orientation of object motion as a reference coordinates. The experimental results are well consistent with the theoretical prediction.

A YW-1 argon laser was used for microirradiation of PTK1; PTK2 cell lines and human red blood cells. The smallest lesion spots were only 0.5 Dm. Cytochemistry analysis demonstrated that the laser mierobeam irradiation can destruct both nucleolar DNA and RNA without any vital staining.
