    Research on laser-plasma interaction in China was conducted in parallel with the high power laser technique. Since 1964, the high power Nd:glass laser system has been developed, the laser breakdown and laser-focusing in the plasma were observed by focusing a 1.06 μm laser beam in the atmosphere. In 1973, frozen deuterrium and LiD,CD2 plate targets were irradiated by a 1010W laser beam, and a neutron yield of 1 x 103/shot was obtained. In 1974, with a 1011 W laser beam shotting on CD2 plate targets, th3 anomalous laser absorption and hard X-ray emission from plasma were observed, neutron yield of more than 2×104/shot was obtained. From 1975-1980, the compression of glass microballoon tergets was observed by using the six-beam laser facility. Moreover many laser-plasma interaction experiments, such as second harmonic emission, X-ray line spectrum diagnostics, K-edge absorption measurements for electron temperatures, Faraday cup charge collectors for particle measurements were carried out.

    In this paper the concentration quenching effects of Tb3+ and Ce3+ ions in phosphate glasses are reported. Using KrF laser (248 nm, 10ns) as excitation source, the fluorescence lifetimes of different concentration of Ce3+ or Tb3+ ions in the glasses have been measured. Energy transfer and sensitization process of Ce3+→Tb3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ in phosphate glasses are discussed in particular.

    In this paper the experimental results of laser multiphoton ionization of background gases (mostly oil-vapor) in the vacuum chamber for laser produced plasma study are presented by using high power laser irradiation. According to the time-of-Sight-spectrnm of the ions with different specific charge, the obtained ions can be divided into four groups: H+, H2+; C+, CH+, CH2+, CH3+ N+, O+; C2+, C2H+, C2H2+, C2H3+,C2H4+, Si+, CHO+, O2+ and C3+, C3H+, C3H2+, C3H3+. Moreover; C++ ions have also bssn obseved. Finally by adding argon gas with definite concentration into the vacuum chamber, Ar+ is observed.

    Frequency doubling of light propagating along the main section in BNN crystals is analyzed with temperature and angle as independent variables. Following results are obtained: approximate relation of second harmonic power temperature, the relation of angle change in the refractive indices of harmonic wave with temperature and relation between temperature and angle in the case of perfect phase-matching. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory.

    A flashlamp pumped dye laser used for spectroscopy is described. Wide tunable region and narrow line width were obtained for a dispersive Brewster prism expander. Tuning with a compound cavity the efficiency of the laser can be increased. This laser system has the advantages of small size, low price and reliable operation.

    A Nd: YAG crystal of φ5 × 50 mm in size was grown by temperature gradient technique, it has good optical homogeneity (interference fringe number is zero) and an efficiency of 1% at 1 or 2 pps. It is easy to be operated in TBM00 mods.

    This paper describes a sealed-off miniature high-power nitrogen laser with a peak output power exceeding 150 kW in a 4 ns pulse. No deterioration of output was observed over half a year period and the stability is about ±7%.

    The end-cleavage of 25CrMnSi steel CCT samples treated by a high-power CW CO2 laser are investigated for improving the miorostructure of the material, changing the stress distribution of the end-cleavage and enhancing the performances of the fatigue failure resistance of the material. It has been shown that △Kth of the materials is increased, the fatiguelifetime is prolonged by over two times and is reduced after laser treatment. The approximate empiric formula is obtained relating the cycle number N of the fatigue crack spread to the laser treatment parameters by means of statistic analysis of the experimental data.

    A laser feedback interferometer for measurement of vibration has been improved by introduction of a matching lens. This improvement enables the system to measure samples having a rude surface and dimensions of down to micrometer range. With the introduction of matching lens, the collimation tolerance of samples could also be greatly relaxed by an order of magnitude or more.

    The error of the two-layer antireflective coating is analysed. It is shown that optical properties of the film composed of non-quarter wavelength stack is stabler than those of the film composed of quarter wavelength stack. The two-layer antirefleetive film has been mads on K9 substrate and Ta2OB5 and SiO2 used as coating material. Its reflectivity at one surface is lower than 0.03% and laser induced damage threshold is over 7 GW/cm2 (at 1.06 μm and 1 ns).

    The experimental results for optical glass waveguides fabricated by Tl ion exchange are reported. The optical properties of the waveguides are better than those of the waveguides fabricated by AgNO3. The optical loss is less and the index profile is of quasistep form. It is shown that the index profile can be fitted by Fermi index profile and An is over 0.13.

    Dry seeds of cultivated soybean "Maneangjin" and "Fengshou 11" were treated with N2, Nd glass and He-Ne lasers. In the M1 generation, some of the plants showed signifcant morphological and physiological damage, and chromosome aberration was observed in root tips mitosis and PMC8 meiosis from seeds treated with N2 and Nd glass lasers. In the M2 generation, stable dwarf mutants were produced from seeds treated with Nd glass and He-Ne lasers. Dwarf mutants showed erect habit, increased number of poods and seeds/plant compared with a control.

    This paper gives a quantitative analysis on the vaporization of tumors by pulsed CO2 laser, skin cutting by CW CO2 laser, tissue coagulation by argon laser, thermal killing of tumor cells by He-Ne aser and hot compression by CO2 laser. Although the calculations are based on a simplified skin model, it may be useful in clinical treatment.

    The kinks in the light/current characteristics in a number of (GaAl) As-bombarded stripe lasers operating in single longitudinal mode are observed experimentally and investigated theoretically. Their mechanisms are shown to be the oecurance of the first order lateral mode, and that during their oecurance the lasers are still operating in a well-behaved single longitudinal mode.

    Altogether 12 cases of eczematous radio-dermatitis, 4 eases of radio-ulcer, 4 cases of solid edema and 1 case of fibrous induration were treated with He-Ne laser irradiation. Among them, 12 were cured, 5 markedly improved and 1 improved.
