We have studied the polarization characteristics of stripe geometry GaAs-Ga1-x AlxAs DH lasers with masked and selective thermal oxidation structure and found that the laser beams consist of both TE and TM modes with nearly the same intensities and are out of phase. The phenomena are quite different from the conventional semiconductor lasers in which the TE mode will be expected. A qualitative explanation for the above anomalous polarization charac-teristics is presented in view of the stresses and photoelastic effects in the active region.

The variation of beam waist position, beam width and light power with injection current in GaAs-AlXGa1-XAs DH stripe-geometry lasers, and the relationship between the station-ary stability and transient self-sustained pulsation have been studied experimentally. When the injection current varies, the position of the vertical beam waist for all types of lasers is always at the laser facet, the vertical beam width remains unchanged. No matter whether or not there are changes in the horizontal beam waist position, the transient self-sustained pulsation usually appears when the horizontal width of the beam waist varies considerably, and the current range for which self-sustained pulsation occurs usually lies between A, B kinks in the light power characteristics.

The experimental study on two-photon dissociation of HgI2 with a KrCl excimer laser at 222 nm is reported. Laser output at 5461 A(73S1-63P2)and 4358 A(73S1-63P1)from atomic Hg is obtained. The process of two-photon dissociation and the formation mechanism of the excited state Hg(73S1)are discussed.

The full hyperfine components of R(127)line in 11-5 band and P(33)line in 6-3 band of B←X electronic transition of molecular iodine were observed by saturated absorp-tion spectroscopy. Its frequency tuning range broadened by Zeeman effect was more than 2500 MHz. The method of the third-derivative signal was used for the detection of the components.

The paper introduces a new method for measuring the radial intensity distribu-tion and the diameter of the Gaussian beam. The radial intensity distribution and the diameter of the Gaussian beam can be obtained by measuring only the intensities on three coordinate point in the same cross section of the Gaussian beam.

We have proposed and developed an optical rotation dispersion collinear optical Kerr shutter. Using this new shutter and the spliting beam sampling technique in combination with a group of glass plates, ultrashort green pulses flying with the velocity of light have been photographed successfully.

This paper introduces how to use holographic interferometry to study the vibration mode of the hydraulic engineering and the model design, some experimental techniques and formulae used in calculation are also described. In the last part, the vibration mode of a factory building of hydro-electric power station and the two dimensional vibration mode of a gravity dam are obtained and the comparison of those results from the theoretical calculation or finite element method are given.

Multi-orders of SRS in hydrogen of tens of atm have been realized, for the first time in China. The frequency conversion is in the range from VUV to the infrared. Two orders of Stokes and six orders of anti-Stokes lines excited by 0.53μm laser light, as well as eight orders of anti-Stokes line excited by 1.06μm laser light were obtained in the same device. So the number of wavelengths ina YAG laser is more than fifteen. The overall efficiency of SRS from the pump light is about 30%. The intensity of the first order Stokes line is as high as several hundreds of kilowatts.

The fact that local anesthesia can not restraint the sense of pain caused by the irradiation of YAG laser light has been discovered in some cases. This phenomenon accounts for the effect of YAG laser in deep organic tissues and the reduced(or lost)efficacy of local anesthesietic results from the irradiation of YAG laser light. In addition, the local anesthesia would also cause the extension of scattering angle(or necrotic area), change the properties and the transmittanne of the laser. All these lead to a conclusion: local anesthesia isn't suitable for YAG laser operation.

13 cases of skin cancer were successfully treated with refrigeration and CO2 laser. Duration of the diseases varied from 3 Months to 15 years. Results: All cases were clinically cured, some of them were followed up and no recurrence was found. It has the following advantages over other treatments: no anaesthesia, no pain, less bleeding, decreasing metastasis of malignant cells and shortening of the treatment course.
