The rapid pace of development in both internet applications and emerging optical technologies is bringing about fundamental changes in network philosophies. Recently,optical burst switching,or OBS,which represents a balance between circuit and packet switching,has opened up some exciting new dimensions in optical networking. We study optical burst switching network based on ring architecture. We propose a method using multiple receivers to reduce contention and analyse its performance by simulation. Numerical results conform that a small number of receivers would be sufficient to achieve very small burst loss rate. It is useful in designing an OBS ring network that using appropriate number of receivers to achieve good performance while reducing hardware cost.
