We have used a method for making off-axis paraboloidal mirrors by means of elastic deformation. The principle is that after applying an appropriate set of forces to a mirror blank, the polishing process can remove the forces and make the surface deform elastioally into the desired off-axis paraboloid. We have made calculations of the stress and deformation for an off-axis Section of a paraboloid and have designed the special jig for applying the force with bars and springs. The experimental results are satisfactory, with a maximum surface deviation from the dsired surface of 1/4λ(λ=0.6328 μm) and a rms error of 1/15λ.
