Two simple calculation methods, i. e. analysis and extrapolation methods, for determining film refractive index of the optical slab waveguides have been presented in this paper. When the film thickness and substrate index are unknowen, these methods can be used to determine film index accurately using the simple four fundamental operations of arithmetic based on linear dependence of the film index upon mode indices.
