Velocity Bunching of Atoms in Laser Standing Wave
Velicity bunching a phenomenon of the atoms bunched near a special velocity in an intensive laser standing wave with negative detuning is studied. The velocity bunching results from laser cooling and heating of two-level atoms cooperatively. When the atomic velocity is lower than a critical velocity, the force will heat the atoms, and when higher than the critical velocity, the force will cool the atoms and then the atoms will be bunched at this critical velocity.
