Five types of grating substructure including quarter wavelength shift, multiple quarter wavelength shift, tapped effective refractive index, tapped coupling coefficient and “stitching” are numerically analyzed using the transfer matrix method. The numerical results agree well with the author′s experimental results and other published results. By a systematic investigation of five substructures with different parameters, some new applications of fiber Bragg gratings are proposed.
