Supercontinuum Generation and Transmission in a Random Distorted Microstructure Fiber

    A random distributed microstructure fiber is demonstrated, and supercontinuum light with a spectrum more than one octave (390~1050 nm) was generated in 60 cm microstructure fiber by the femtosecond pulse laser with a duration of 35 fs and a energy of several nanojoules per pulse. The large refractive-index step between silica and air allows light to be concentrated into a very small area and resulting in those enhanced nonlinear effects. Some new phenomena is observed when the supercontinuum light transmits in this fiber due to its incomplete photonic band gap, such as the color variation along the fiber.
